materials:
Using renewable natural materials including timber and bamboo, Timber is used usually in main structure and bamboo is used for wall and floor. The dwellings are built without the use of metal including nails. Instead pre-cut holes and grooves are used to fit the timber elements into one another.
Although nails had been invented and in later houses used minimally for non-structural elements (for example, windows or panels), structural flexibility was a benefit which nailing inhibited.

Construction methods:
In that time there were no nails, that’s why they used different types of wood joint such as wooden pegged joints, birdsmouth joints, tenon joints, wedges joints and dado joints in construction method of house (floor, wall and roof).
ROOF:
For roofing, timber is used as framework for support. Birdsmouth joints is been used between wall plate and rafter.Wooden pegged mottises and tenon joints are been used in roof structure. The size of rafter timbers will depend upon their length for walls ridges and roof finishes. High pitched, gabled roof, which dominates the house, was traditionally covered thatch but is now more often covered galvanized iron. |
